I know what you are thinking…OUCH! No, I don’t mean the summer version of the belly flop, because let’s face it, SUMMER IS OVER PEOPLE! At least for me it is. I went back to school on Thursday and our district’s Special Education Director absolutely hit a home run with this one. Are you a Belly Flop?
What are Belly Flops?
Belly Flops are jelly beans that come out imperfect. They might be the wrong color and flavor combination, be a different shape or a different size. They still have the amazing taste and bright, bold colors, but don’t think you can guess what is inside. That remains a mystery or maybe it will be what you anticipated. Who knows?
A class full of Belly Flops?
As we head back to school, you are about to encounter a room full of belly flops. None of your students are “perfect” jelly beans. They all have hidden talents, different learning styles, unique preferences and yet at times, we expect them to all fit into a certain “shape, size or color.” We don’t know right off exactly how to meet the needs of these mysterious Belly Flops, but after we get to know them and learn their features, preferences and learning styles, we can then begin to meet their needs. What an exciting and scary journey! Just like with Belly Flops. No one wants to bite into something they think is a cherry only to get a booger! GROSS, right?
Enjoy the journey with your “Belly Flops”
Don’t judge your students by their color, shape, or size. We don’t want their parents to judge us either. Forget about the labels, flags in the computer, and really focus on getting to know your students for yourself. All students can learn, we know this! Some of the most difficult students can have the biggest impact on your heart. Give each student a chance to show the uniqueness of their flavor, character, and features. I want to challenge you to enjoy this fun, exciting, and yet scary journey with your Belly Flops this year, because in the end, aren’t we all Belly Flops? Enjoy your year and I pray that it is the BEST YEAR EVER!!!
