What is the hardest math concept and skill to teach 2nd graders?  Subtraction with Regrouping!  Those second graders that struggle with it, become third graders that still need to be reminded of the rules and steps.  In the Fall, I created Subtraction with Regrouping Checklists for my 3rd grade math groups and guess what I will be using this week with my 2nd graders?  YEP!  The same checklist!  Here’s how it works.

Subtraction with Regrouping is difficult for 2nd graders. Looking for an easy way to teach subtraction with regrouping? Here's your solution!

It’s no secret that students that struggle need a guide.  It’s important for them to find a process in order to learn what works for them.  Now, this checklist might not work for every student, but if you have a student that nothing seems to help, give it a try.  The reason that it works is because they can see each step and refer back as often as necessary, until the process becomes memorized.

Print the checklist, laminate, and then allow students to use a Visa-Visa or dry erase marker for repeated use of the checklist.  It might be a good idea to print out several and have in folders, at home, desk, etc.  Want a free copy of the checklist and a checklist for subtracting across zeros?  Click here!  Be sure to follow my Teachers Pay Teachers store for more freebies and products.

  • I love these! My students used them last year and they were so helpful. I was wondering if you had ones for addition? Thanks!
