Looking for a celebration for the end of your vowel teams unit? This vowel town ocean might be just what you’re looking for!

In my district, we use the Phonics Units of Study for our curriculum. This Vowel Town idea is included at the end of unit 4. I am sharing how we used this idea to celebrate learning in our school.

Prep and Materials

This celebration is actually quite simple as far as materials and purchases. The only things you need are clip art and access to a color printer. I’ll link below a few of my favorite clip art packs for this activity.

  • Community helper people
  • Buildings
  • Signs
  • Vehicles

We printed grids for the map, but next year, we will just use green bulletin board paper. After printing, the fun begins! We cut all of the pieces so that the students wouldn’t have to do it. The only thing the students needed was scissors.

Discuss, Design, and Build

On Vowel Town construction day, students were placed into groups. They talked about their town layout and items they wanted to include. Then they started choosing their pieces and building.

Label all the Things

After all the towns are completed, we hung them in the hallway to connect all of them together. Then the real work began!

To warm up, I called out a few words they might need to label. I called out words like fireman, truck, tree, house, ice cream, etc

After our warm up, we went to the hallway one class at a time and allowed our students to label two items per town with sticky notes. They did an awesome job putting their vowel team power to practice.

Step it up!

Next year, we will add to this idea and include geometry and economics standards. Shapes can be labeled for geometry. Students can also discuss the goods and services provided in their town. What ideas do you have to add? Comment below!

  • So who gets to take it home? I love the group idea of planning it out but in covid times that may not be possible. I know my kiddos would be super excited to take it home.

  • After seeing this on IG, o completed it with my class, but with pictures from our community locations and community helpers instead of clip art. We also added pictures of us to Vowel Town! Such an awesome idea!

  • Wow this is a great idea. I have 9 more weeks of teaching till July 29th so this will surely for into there. Can’t wait for all the fun?

  • Where did you get all of the pieces for Vowel Town? Please let me know. Thank you.
